A message from the Baw Baw Sustainability Network:
THE Baw Baw Sustainability Network is hosting a free public information night on new coal and coal seam gas mining in Gippsland on Friday 5th April at 7pm at the Darnum Public Hall.
The aim of the evening is to provide the whole community with information and the chance to ask questions about the prospect of this industry starting up in Gippsland. The speakers include:
- Mark Ogge from The Australia Institute
- Dr Jo McCubbin from Doctors for the Environment
- Nick Groggon from the Environmental Defenders Office
Much of West Gippsland as well as South Gippsland and East Gippsland is covered by coal seam gas, tight gas or open cut coal exploration licences. Some areas are more likely to be mined than others but all these areas are under threat. Local communities are needing to band together to protect the interests of landowners, as well as the whole community who rely on clean water, uncontaminated land for food production and a safe climate for this and future generations. This coal and gas industry threatens all these things and benefits only shareholders in the short term.
The industry and the politicians who support them need to hear from the community that they are not welcome to disrupt and threaten vital agricultural activity in Gippsland and contaminate our surface and groundwater resources.
