THERE is a lot happening across the region in May. Matthew Sims has put together this handy guide to help you decide what to do:

Miniatures in May: April 29 – May 24

Yarragon’s Station Gallery will provide the space for paintings no bigger than the average novel.

The pieces have been borrowed by the Courthouse Gallery in Yarram for every Wednesday to Sunday.

Members of the community are encouraged to begin the exhibition at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 2.

Hot to Trot on Holiday: April 30 – May 24

Walk in with your spare change and come out with a worthy addition to the wall of your home by coming down to the Courthouse Gallery every day, except Wednesday.

The official party will commence at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 23.

GOLD: The Ultimate ABBA Show: May 1

Happy Days Records presents a one-time show at the West Gippsland Arts Centre exploring the history of the Swedish pop band, including all of their greatest hits.

Tickets for groups of 10 or more are available at $55 or $60 for an adult.

Being There: May 1-31

The artwork of Geoff Harrison will be exhibited in the Lillico Glass Studio during the month of May.

Approximately a ten minute drive from the centre of Warragul, the artworks focus on brightness and contrast and aim to be completely immersive.

The exhibition will have an official opening on Saturday, May 9 at 1:30 p.m and will be open from Wednesday to Sunday at 10 in the morning until 5 in the evening throughout the month.

Fresh Marks: May 1-31

Local artist and integral community member, Wombat Lyons will showcase the art he has produced so far in 2015.

The Eat Live Fresh Café in Trafalgar, a 15 minute drive from Warragul, will host the installation every day from 8 until 3.

The works were created using what is known as ‘mark making’, whereby what is painted is given meaning by the mark created by the paint itself.

Inspirations from Africa and Australia: May 2-31

The award-winning artists Darren Gilbert and Janet Matthews will come together in this eclectic mix of pencil, ink and sculpture.

Yarragon’s Town and Country Gallery will open the exhibition with drinks on Saturday, May 2 at 2 p.m.

The gallery will be open daily from 10 until 5.

Open House Drouin: May 2-3

The historical town of Drouin will be showcased to the public, with various events taking place throughout the weekend of May 2.

A ten minute drive from Warragul will take you back through the colourful past of the town, including the Croquet Club, Butter Factory and Royal Hotel.

From 10 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon, all activities, including an appearance from the Baw Baw Poetry Group’s ‘Pop Up Poetry’ are free.

Both Sides: May 3

Renowned Australian show business household names David Hobson and Rachel Beck are joining forces once again to help the struggling Mawarra Day Services Centre get back on its feet.

The opera singer and musical performer will perform at the West Gippsland Arts Centre for one show of their eclectic musical show ‘Both Sides’ on Sunday, May 3.

There is an opportunity to speak with the performers and enjoy food and refreshments before the show.

This chance is only available to those who buy a VIP ticket for $70.

A normal ticket will still support the cause of Mawarra Centre and will only cost $60.

The pre-show “meet and greet” will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the performance will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Genius Loci – Spirit of Place: May 5-29

Printmakers from the town of Briagolong will be displaying their works at the West Gippsland Arts Centre.

Freestone Printmakers’s Genius Loci will use the space to their advantage and will open on Tuesday, May 5 from 7 p.m until 8:30.

It will continue to run during each day of the week.

The Martin and Lewis Show – From Las Vegas to Hollywood – 70th Anniversary Tour: 7 May

Las Vegas regulars will brighten up the West Gippsland Arts Centre for one night in their show celebrating the comedy and charisma of Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin.

Featuring Tom Stevens as Martin and Tony Lewis as Lewis, the show will incorporate music and comedy at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 7.

Tickets cost $55, with five dollars off for WGAC members, concessions or groups of 8 or more.

Studios to Showroom: May 7-29

The Mitsubishi and Nissan dealership in Warragul will show the recent works of Eclectic Art Group during the day.

The presentation will open at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 7.

Jindivick and Narkoojee Sculpture Show: May 9-September 27

After more than ten years running, the Travelling Jindivick Sculpture Show is returning from this May to September.

The show will welcome sculptures from local artists and certain sculptures will be chosen to be installed at Jindivick and at Narkoojie Winery in Glengarry.

The show will open on Saturday, May 9 at 2:30 p.m at Jindivick Village until May 24 and then move to Narkoojie Winery.

Hello Dolly: May 15-23

The Warragul Theatre Company is bringing Broadway to Warragul in a new production of the old classic Hello, Dolly! in their first production of 2015.

The well-known musical will run at the West Gippsland Arts Centre from May 15 to 23.

The show will open on Friday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m. and continue with matinees at 1:30 p.m on Saturday and Sunday and another night show on Saturday.

The production will continue on Thursday and Friday night and will end with a matinee and evening showing on Saturday.

Tickets range from 30 dollars for children to 45 dollars for adults.

Creative Yarragon Arts Festival…The Full Spectrum: May 16-17

The Yarragon Public Hall will host an array of art workshops in the Creative Yarragon Arts Festival on Saturday and Sunday, May 16 and 17.

The weekend will include more than 18 different classes over several mediums including charcoal, alpaca fur and airbrushing.

Entry costs $15 with an extra $10 for each one-hour workshop.

Country and Coast: May 21-31

Art coming from three generations of three families will be displayed at The Old Grainstore in Yarragon.

Works from Alene Bonser, Clare Thody and Margaret Allnut, along with their children and grandchildren will be shown every day.

The official opening will take place on Sunday, May 24 at 2 p.m.

A Ball in a Ball: May 22

Members of the Yarragon community are welcome to come in to the Station Gallery at the Yarragon train station to create their own ornamental felt ball.

The opportunity to breathe some light into your home is available for $25 on Friday any time during the day.

Ken Schroder and his Jazz Band: May 23

Melbourne saxophonist Ken Schroder and six other musicians will perform at Wesley of Warragul at 8 p.m.

Tickets are fee for children, $35 for adults and $30 for concessions.

Rear View Mirror: Looking back: May 25-31

A retrospective look into the history of textiles as art will be presented by local artist Glenys Mann at The Station Gallery for a short time in May.

Those interested in the history in art are welcome to come to the opening on Saturday, May 30 at 2 p.m.

Kelly: May 26

Australia’s most infamous and beloved figure is set to collide with fiction in the Queensland Theatre Company’s Kelly.

Three renowned Brisbane actors will perform the original play for one night on Tuesday, May 26 at the West Gippsland Arts Centre.

The perfomance portrays the fictitious last conversation between brothers Ned and Dan Kelly, imagining if Dan did not die in the famous Glenrowan shootout.

Prices for a ticket range from 30 dollars for children to 45 dollars for adults and can be purchased online or via the box office on 5624 2456.

The performance will begin at 8:00 p.m. and will run for 80 minutes without an interval.

The performance is recommended for people over the age of 15.

Buddy Holly In Concert: May 29

Scot Robin will reprise his role as Buddy Holly, as he plays all the classics in one show at the West Gippsland Arts Centre.

The show will start at 8 p.m. and tickets cost $65.

Exhibition by Sally Walk: All of May

Famous Baw Baw artist Sally Walk will reveal her works at Briagolong Art Gallery throughout the month of May.

The gallery will be open every Saturday and Sunday.

Artist in Residence: All of May

Sale resident and artist, Helen Masin will be opening up a studio for at Red Tree Gallery in Jindivick during the weekend of May 2-3.

She will also be conducting a class on how to make a canvas ready for painting at 2 p.m. on May 2.
