UPDATE 8.10pm: the severe thunderstorm warning has been cancelled. The fire weather warning remains in place.

The Bureau of Meteorology has released a warning map showing areas impacted by the Westbury bushfire north east of Trafalgar may be affected by the thunderstorm, along with Warragul and most of the Baw Baw Shire.

A similar severe thunderstorm warning was issued last night but later cancelled.

Thunderstorms on Wednesday night started a number of fires in the region.

The State Emergency Service has advised people in affected areas to:

  • keep clear of fallen power lines
  • secure any loose objects in the vicinity of your home
  • stay indoors if possible
  • avoid using the phone during the storm
  • if outside avoid sheltering under trees
  • listen to the radio for storm updates
  • switch off computers and electrical appliances

The Severe Fire Danger warning for West Gippsland remains in place.

Up to date storm and weather information can be found at the BoM website.

The next warning is due to be issued by 7:00 pm.
