WARRAGUL Community Kindergarten has been temporarily closed after asbestos was found during preparations for the facility’s extension.

The Baw Baw Shire Council said asbestos was found in five locations at the Mouritz Street kinder but nobody had been placed at risk.

“These sites are intact and not near the active part of the centre where there are children and staff; no one was put at any risk,” a spokesperson said in a media release.

“To mitigate any chance of inadvertent exposure during the ongoing renovations it was deemed in the best interest of everyone to suspend kinder activities at the site until this additional asbestos could be removed.”

The asbestos will be removed tomorrow with kids expected to return on Thursday after an independent assessor gives visual clearance.

The spokesperson said builders and assessors were working as quickly as possible to minimise disruption and apologised for any inconvenience caused to families affected.

The kinder serves around 25 children and is one of five in Warragul.
