A Baw Baw Shire Council spokesperson told The Warragul Citizen a mayor will be elected as it is a legal requirement that the council do so.

The agenda item titled “Election of mayor and deputy mayor”, which outlines the role of the mayor’s position, only recommends a deputy mayor be elected for the 2012/2013 term.

South Gippsland Shire Council’s equivalent agenda item recommends its councillors elect both a mayor and a deputy.

The deputy mayor position is a convention and is not legally required to be filled.

Baw Baw’s previous mayor Diane Blackwood, who held the position for two years, was not returned to the council at last month’s election, but previous deputy mayor Tricia Jones is still on the council.

A short-lived convention of deputy mayors becoming mayor stood in Baw Baw until last year when then-deputy Tony Wolfe was not promoted.

The special council meeting will be held at 5.30 in the Warragul Council Chambers.
