DRIVERS are being advised to look out for cyclists or face the consequences as part of Safe Cycle Month.
Local police are targeting drivers who, according to the recent Bike It Baw Baw! study, drive aggressively around and do not look out for cyclists.

Head of the Baw Baw Highway Patrol, acting Sergeant Ellane Clarke, said in a Baw Baw Shire media release there are simple ways to improve safety.
“Many collisions involving cyclists could be prevented if drivers were more aware of cyclists,” Sergeant Clarke said.
“Slowing down, providing enough distance and respecting cyclists as a legitimate road user are part of safe driving practices.”
Sergeant Clarke said drivers need to be aware cyclists may move unpredictably to avoid potholes and it is often safer for cyclists to ride closer to the middle of the lane.

“Poor road conditions in the Shire are also contributing to cycling safety, according to Monash University’s Accident Research Centre,” Sergeant Clarke said.
Police are also encouraging cyclists to increase their safety through front and back lights, helmets and adhering to road rules.

Road users are also reminded patience improves safety.
“Being patient and courteous of all road users will make travelling on our roads a much safer environment for all, especially cyclists,” Sergeant Clarke said.
Thirty-five thousand bike riders use roads and paths in the Baw Baw Shire every year.
This is the 29th Safe Cycle Month.
