UPDATE (3.05pm): Emergency services have given the all clear after the leak was plugged.
People have been asked to stay around 200 metres clear of the Mason Street and Palmerston Street intersection while emergency crews fix the problem.
The advice area also includes Williams Street, Barkly Street, and part of Smith and Percy Streets.
CFA officials have advised those within that area to “close windows and doors and turn off heating and cooling systems and remain indoors if possible.”
“There is currently no threat to the community, but you should continue to stay informed and monitor conditions.
“To allow emergency services to respond to this hazard, people are asked to avoid the area.
“Those located within 200m of the area are requested to avoid creating ignition sources.”
The Baw Baw Shire Council has also advised people to stay away from the Warragul Senior Citizens Club, which is located next door to the police station.
