Two new benches designed and made by local artist Laurie Collins and the Baw Baw Arts Alliance have been installed at Burke Street Park, Warragul.

The benches feature a back made of sculpted metal with mosaic inlays and are located around a large mosaic by the late Maery Gabriel.

Baw Baw Arts Alliance mosaic tutor Ingrid Thomas said the seats are designed to compliment Ms Gabriel’s work.

“The idea for the [seats] was to highlight the compass rose in the ground by providing a place to sit and to contemplate the mosaics,” Ms Thomas said.

Ms Gabriel started the project in August 2010.

The project was funded by the Baw Baw Shire Council, but many of the artists involved volunteered to see it completed.
