OVER 65 cyclists from across Baw Baw took part in the council’s Ride to Work Day celebrations yesterday, beating previous attendance records for the annual event.

Bike riders from across the shire convened at Warragul’s Queen Street Park from 7.30am for a free hot breakfast, coffee and musical performances.

Riders also received free bike checks and safety tips from local police.

The event coincides with Safe Cycle Month, in which drivers and cyclists are being encouraged to watch out for each other on the roads.

The recent Bike It Baw Baw! study, conducted by Monash University, found motorists do not look out for cyclists.

Baw Baw Shire Council CEO Helen Anstis said in a media release the event highlights just how easy riding to work can be.

“Ride to Work day was a wonderful opportunity for bike riders who have never cycled to work to join others and celebrate the ‘treadlie’,” Ms Anstis said.

“Bike riding gives you a different perspective on your neighbourhood and you often notice things you never would in a car.

“Baw Baw Shire is a beautiful area to cycle and we especially encourage those who live locally to try cycling once a week – you might be surprised by how easy and fun it is.”

Ride to Work Day is a national campaign which encourages people to get back on their bikes.
