The annual National Red Balloon Day event was inspired by an event run in Geelong early last year, which Bendigo woman Jody Hardiman has ramped up to a national level.

Orgnaisers have sought to raise funds for fire services through the sale of branded red balloons which can be purchased at

The campaign is not-for-profit.

A spokesperson for the Warragul Fire Brigade told the Warragul & Baw Baw Citizen fire fighters appreciated the recognition for their support of the community.

“To my mind, it’s more about thanking the firies by showing your appreciation, ie put out a red balloon, than fundraising,” the spokesperson said.

“We do the job because we want to help the community, not for recognition, but it is lovely to see the community show their support in return.”

Warragul CFA has already acknowledged the campaign on Facebook. As well as flying a balloon, you can thank volunteers online by searching for your local brigade on Facebook.

Organisers have asked that people who do display balloons outdoors secure them firmly to a letterbox or fence and dispose of them appropriately at the end of the day to minimise potential environmental impact.
