THE Baw Baw Shire Council’s Smoke Free Outdoor Areas trial has been commended in the VicHealth Victorian Health Promotion Awards.
The policy trial was one of three finalists in the “Building Health Through Community and Local Government” category.
The category winner was Women’s Health West’s Western Region Action Plan to Prevent Violence Against Women.
Baw Baw CEO Helen Anstis said in a media release the award was an endorsement of the policy.
“The fact that Baw Baw made it to the final three is an endorsement of the no smoking trial,” Ms Anstis said.
The awards were held on December 5.
The trial was extended in August after councillors voted unanimously to see the policy become law.
Then-councillor Tony Wolfe said the council’s community consultation showed the policy to be popular.
“The consultation phase was overwhelmingly positive and supportive of the trial,” Mr Wolfe said.
The law will come before council early next year.
VicHealth, also known as the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation, was established by the State Government as part of the Tobacco Act of 1987.
