LOCAL CFA crews have expressed disappointment after being called to ten out-of-control burn-offs in West Gippsland yesterday.

A Warragul CFA spokesperson said in a media release that residents should be more careful when choosing when and how to burn off.

“Residents are reminded to make sure they have an area cleared of flammable material for three metres around the fire [and] have enough people to monitor, contain and extinguish the burn safely and effectively.”

The spokesperson said yesterday’s weather was not appropriate for burning off.

“Check the weather forecast, today was not a good day, for the day of the burn and a few days afterwards.”

Darnum-Ellinbank, Drouin, Drouin West, Hallora, Longwarry, Neerim South, Nilma North, Noojee and Warragul brigades were all called to fires yesterday.

“This is disappointing, as it has meant countless hours of volunteers’ time has been spent away from their families for something that could have been avoided,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said neighbours and other authorities should be notified.

“Notify your neighbours at least two hours before starting the burn, so they are aware and don’t unnecessarily call the fire brigade.”

“Please also notify the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority on 1800 668 511 – this enables VicFire to avoid responding brigades for fires which have been registered and are still under control.”
