THE aquatic facilities at the Warragul Leisure Centre will close for construction work on 1 April.

In a media release Baw Baw mayor Debbie Brown said the construction was an exciting step in the centre’s redevelopment project, despite the closure causing some inconvenience.

“Once the pools close we can get the ball rolling on the redevelopment,” Cr Brown said.

“There is a fair bit of preparation work that needs to occur prior to the appointment of a building contractor.

“We need to ensure all the existing equipment and furniture is removed from the construction areas and stored away safely.

“Doing this preparation work prior to the contractors coming on board will ensure a quick transition and get the redevelopment started as soon as possible.”

In an attempt to cause the least amount of disruption to programming and swimming lessons the closure of the centre will commence during the Easter school holidays.

Cr Brown said that there will be numerous alternative venues open during the closure of the centre.

“Council has had numerous discussions to find alternative venues for swimming lessons,” she said.

“A number of neighbouring facilities in Pakenham, Newborough, Morwell and Churchill currently have capacity in their Learn to Swim programs, with qualified and experienced AUSTSWIM instructors.”

“The Drouin Secondary College has also been kind enough to allow the general public access to their pool between 06:00 am and 08:30 Monday to Friday and on Sunday mornings.”

Despite the Warragul Leisure Centre’s redevelopment, the stadium, crèche and group fitness programs will continue to run.

Works are expected to commence on the stadium roof replacement in the December 2015/January 2016 school holiday period.
