THE BAW Baw Shire says it has been pushing the State Government for a solution to Gippsland Line train overcrowding.

In response to a question on notice from David Lyons of Trafalgar at last night’s council meeting, the Baw Baw Shire said it is advocating for improved services.

“Council has been advocating to the Minister for Transport on the overcrowding on current V/Line services and will continue to do so,” the statement read.

The Gippsland Local Government Network, a representative body of Gippsland councils, unsuccessfully pushed for additional services in its last budget submission.

Mr Lyons’ question asked if the council had discussed a proposal made earlier this year by metropolitan rail operator Metro to terminate V/Line services at Pakenham.

The Baw Baw Shire said no discussions had taken place because the proposal was rejected by the State Government in August.

“We have not had any official discussions with the Minister for Transport or local MPs on this particular proposal as both the Minister and our local MP have advised through the media that the proposal by the Metro service is not supported by the Government,” the statement read.

  1. Graeme says:

Considering it is aledged that no contracts have yet been signed for the promised (2012 Budget) extra carriages to make all Velocity services up to a minimum of three cars, I don’t hold out much hope of any extra services in the near future or a limiting of the present overcrowding on most services.
Mind you things could change somewhat with the impending Sunbury electrification.
