Council officers had recommended a new 21 year lease with the current lessee of the park while retaining an 18 metre wide strip of land for use by the Walhalla Goldfields Railway in the future.

North ward councillor David Balfour moved an alternate motion at the Wednesday 26 August council meeting, calling for the lease to remain the same, at least for the short term.

Councillors discussed the future needs of the railway’s restoration project when making their decision.

Short sighted and a bit useless. Doesn’t this impact future expansion of the Walhalla Goldfields railway. My understanding is the 18m lay away is insufficient for works sheds, potential retail etc once the railway line is extended through to Erica. Surely all the hard work underway already by the WGR team should have been considered in this decision.
