The vehicle, owned by Infrastructure Management Group, is being used to survey 1,720km of roads, drains and signage throughout the shire.

Using the car, GPS and high definition cameras, IMG is producing pictorial records of road surfaces and associated assets to form a refreshed road condition and inventory database.

Earlier this year councillors approved a motion to contract IMG to conduct the survey for a cost of over $161,000.

Mayor Murray Cook said the survey will improve road repair works.

“Understanding the state of each road through proper appraisal and measurement will help us to allocate funding into the future,” Cr Cook said.

The decision to use the survey as a measure of road quality came a week after councillors established a new Roads and Drains Advisory Committee, which was designed to provide information on road quality for free.

“The main thrust of [this] advisory committee… is to bring in local knowledge to help the professions that work on our staff that (the locals) know exactly what the conditions are here over a period of time (sic),” Cr Cook told The Warragul Citizen.

A spokesperson for the Baw Baw Shire Council has told The Warragul Citizen the survey cost will include the imagery and viewing software used for the data collection.

The survey is expected to take six months.

Better send it out to Neerim South, via Brandy Creek Road and Bloomfields Road. Main Neerim Road is also shocking.
