School Road a no-go zone

TRAFFIC conditions on Drouin’s School Road have changed with the return of primary school students.

The Baw Baw Shire Council has begun trialling a right turn ban to prevent cars moving from Princes Way into School Road to ensure the safety of school students.

The trial is the result of a petition tabled during a council meeting in August last year.

That petition was signed by 133 parents and community members of Drouin Primary School.

Approval of the trial came after considerable consultation with business owners on School Road and local residents, according to the council.

The right turn ban will be in operation during peak hour school times; 8:45am to 9:15am and 3:15pm to 3:45pm, Monday to Friday.

Permanent implementation of the ban will depend on the effectiveness and outcome of the trial.

The right turn ban is one of numerous traffic and pedestrian safety improvements to be implemented in Drouin’s CBD.

A change in the speed limit along Princes Way from 50km/h to 40km/h and the installation of a new pedestrian crossing between Main South Road and Bank Place has also been proposed.

The council is seeking feedback from the community on traffic and pedestrian issues in the Drouin CBD during the consultation period, which will run until 15 February.
