Trafalgar Junior Football Club Youth Girls scored  1.4-10 to Warragul’s 4.0-24.

Colts president Tony Linford told the Baw Baw Citizen the game as a “fantastic win” for the team.

“They’ve been working pretty hard to get to this level so it’s an awesome effort,” he said after the game.

“It was the top four finals for the Central Gippsland Junior Football League, and the Colts finished fourth.

“They beat the Newborough Reds last week to get into this game, which is the preliminary final, and the win against Traf today puts them into the grand final. They play Newborough Blues next week in Moe.”

Trafalgar coach Mark Smith said the result was “not what we expected, but [the team] played a good brand of footy.”

Making the preliminary final was a great effort for the team, which is only in its first year.

“It has been a pretty big effort for the girls, definitely,” Smith told the Baw Baw Citizen.

“I’m just proud of the girls and how far they’ve come in their first season.”

Smith said he was excited about next year.

“If we keep most of the girls around and still playing the brand of footy they were then definitely, yes, it’s exciting times ahead.”

The Colts’ Youth Girls team has been in the league since its inception in playing since 2013, and next week will be the second time the team has made the grand final.

Linford said watching the league grow has been “fantastic.”

“It started off with four footy teams in Gippsland, it’s now in three different divisions and about six teams in each one, so we’ve gone from four up to almost 20 Youth Girls teams.”
